Now Satanic Abuse Strikes Durham
« on: July 03, 2008, 12:59:21 PM »

A lot of us here, excluding the Lacrosse team, were accusing Durham  of indulging in a witch hunt. There is no longer any doubt about this.Durham just now has , officially, charged  three representatives of their county Democratic party  with kidnapping(one alleged victim was confined  in a dog kennel), flagellation ,rape, Satanic abuse and(in the case of the third and politically ranking defendant)aiding and abetting.
They all(or were until today) listed on the Democrariic website. This section of the site  has now been blocked from public access.
The attorney for the third party states  his client is innocent and the police already know it.
In what other well-known Durham prosecution  did we hear similar counter-allegations?
It is not yet known if Ms.Crystal Mangum will figure on the list of prosecution witnesses. As she has received a college diploma where she specialized in criminal psychology-and (allegedly )spent half an hour suspended in mid-air during a mass Durham gang rape,it iis not impossible that she could be called to testify as an expert in Forensic Parapsychology.

It's a good thing you (the collective you) refrained from publishing a person's name, whom you (again, the collective you) publicly pronounced guilty of the crime of hacking the LS forum without verifying the validity of the declaration.

Oops, it didn't happen that way at all, did it?

What's that word I'm looking for? Oh, yeah; hypocrisy.

So sorry. Had to clarify that there was no public vetting of any supposed "evidence" against the person whom was publicly named as a criminal. Only a public declaration of "guilty".

Our "we" is a royal, monarchial type "we". Further we are unaware of any collectivity that is seeking our opinion on anything, particularly not   LS where I tote  about as much influence as President Brodhead on policy or collective deliberations.

  Further madness.
It now develops that the alleged male victim is nineteen years old and his female companion forty-four.Both have fled the State  in "terror of the defendants"but the prosecution promises to have them back for a preliminary hearing postponed till after July 21st.

Yesterday saw the two missing accusers back ini Durham and testifying for several hours against the two defendants.Wherever the pair  were they  still call the residence of the defendants  their home.
Crystal Mangum's former lawyer,Woody Vann,is one half of the defense team.He points out that the 19 year accuser is a martial arts student and much larger than either of his two landlords. Both he and his forty-four year old mistress have cell phones, continued to return the house after the alleged sexual assaults and beatings, took several trips with the defendants, and maintained steady employment despite their alleged servitude. Vann says the whole case is unbelievable. It is obviously a case of" consentual  sadomasochistic behavior
Still... Crystal Mangum,Woody's former client, is an older woman who forced herself on teenagers, utilized a cell phone throughout her alleged "beatings" and "sexual assaults" at the hands of the Lacrosse team, twice returned after to their house to "make more money" and  daily  practiced a profession which often involved "consentual sadomasochistic behavior".
Why then didn't Woody find Crystal's story unbelievable? In fact(with the exception of one tv broadcast) Woody continued to  defend  Crystal (and his crony Nifong) on Fox for thirteen months until the State of North Carolina proclaimed the boys innocent.

   From today's News & Observer:
Bail reduced in case of 'sadomasochism gone awry'

A Durham Superior Court judge reduced bail today for the man accused in the rape, kidnapping and beating case that defense lawyers have described as "consensual sadomasochism gone awry."
Judge Orlando Hudson lowered bail to $50,000 for Joseph Craig, who has been in the Durham County Jail since late June.

A former dispatcher at Allied Waste Industries, Craig, 25, has been charged with second-degree rape, second-degree forcible sexual offense, three counts of second-degree kidnapping and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

His wife, Joy Johnson, 30, faces aiding and abetting charges in a case that has created financial hardships for the couple, defense lawyers say.

The accusers in the bizarre case are a 44-year-old woman and 19-year-old man who moved in with the couple more than 10 months ago to study the occult.

The man, James Frederick Bethard, 19, of Maryland, accuses Craig of forcing him into a dog cage with his arms and legs shackled, and beating him repeatedly with a cane.

The woman accused Craig of raping her while she was trying to channel spirits, although she testified this summer that she also engaged in consensual oral sex with the accused more than once.

The News & Observer is not identifying the woman in keeping with its general policy of not identifying people who allege sex crimes.

Although prosecutors have laced their descriptions of the allegations with references to satanic rituals and the study of the occult, defense lawyers have described the incidents as sadomasochism.

The question the state would put before a jury, Hudson said, is: At what point does sadomasochism becomes assault?

"Not that I know anything personally about sadomasochism." Hudson said in court today, "but inherent -- that that's what the person wants."

In July, Hudson reduced bail for Johnson over the objections of Assistant District Attorney Jan Paul, who told the judge the accusers felt threatened by the couple.

During that hearing, Elizabeth Curran, the public defender representing Johnson, said the charges made no sense.

"There is no corroborating evidence offered," Curran said. "We have a female ... who was on the stand who was in therapy.

"This is the same woman who at the time she said she was being raped also said she was channeling demons," Curran added later in the hearing.

Johnson, released on bail in July, moved to Mecklenburg County a short time later to live with her mother. She was ordered to have no contact with the accusers and she has not, according to Curran.

Woody Vann, the Durham lawyer representing Craig, said the couple has suffered financial hardships while waiting for the case to move through the courts.

Craig lost his dispatcher job while behind bars. The couple, now struggling to pay their bills, was forced from their rental home on Albany Street in Durham, Vann added.

"He's out of a job, he's lost his property, and he's lost his reputation," Vann said.
[SC: There is a Durham website which labels itself as Satanist(not to be confused with  the California based "Church  of Satan) and all these people appear to be known there.]

Testimony this summer revealed an unusual living arrangement in the small house on Albany Street where Craig and Johnson lived.

Bethard was already living with the couple when the female accuser arrived in December after meeting them through a Web site.

At some point, though, both Bethard and the 44-year-old woman with whom he would start a sexual relationship said, they began to fear the couple they've now accused of assault.

Although each worked outside the home and had a cell phone and access to money, both stayed with the accused until late June, long after the incidents were said to have occurred.

Defense lawyers have described the woman as someone who used multiple names online and who took anti-depression medication. Bethard was described as a buyer and user of cocaine, an allegation he denied.

Sadomasochism case may go to state prosecutor

Another of Durham's sensational sexual assault cases could land in the state Attorney General's Office -- just as the Duke lacrosse case did.
Durham District Attorney David Saacks has talked with the state's top prosecutor about taking over the cases against Joseph Scott Craig, 25, and Joy Suz-anne Johnson, 30. The husband and wife are accused in rape, kidnapping and assault cases that include allegations of forced sex while channeling demons, and caning and caging a man.

Johnson was third vice chairwoman of the Durham County Democratic Party when police arrested her in late June on charges that she aided and abetted her husband during the alleged rape, kidnapping and beating.

Tracey Cline, a Democrat who is running unopposed for the Durham district attorney seat, has asked that the case be turned over to the attorney general if it has not been settled by Jan. 5, when she presumably would take office. During the Democratic primary races this spring, Cline was in contact with Johnson.

"I'm not sure how much," Saacks said Friday, "but it was clearly enough that she thought she might have a conflict of interest on the case."

The cases were assigned to Assistant District Attorney Jan Paul, who has offered several plea agreements that have been turned down by Craig and Johnson.

..........

Defense lawyers have described the case as "consensual sadomasochism gone awry."

On Friday, during the bond reduction hearing, Hudson questioned whether prosecutors would essentially put jurors in a position of deciding at what point sadomasochistic sex becomes too brutal. "Not that I know anything personally about sadomasochism, but isn't that inherent -- that that's what the person wants?" Hudson said.

...........

During the hearing Friday, Hudson asked why the case seemed stalled in the courts.

In July, when Hudson reduced bail for Johnson over the objections of prosecutors, Paul said she would soon take the allegations to a grand jury. But in the months since, she has not followed through, leaving the case in legal limbo.

"Do we think the grand jury does not know what sadomasochist sex is?" Hudson asked.

Attorney general, DA talk handoff
By KEITH UPCHURCH : The Herald-Sun

DURHAM -- The N.C. Attorney General's Office has met with Durham District Attorney David Saacks to discuss taking over the cases of Joseph Scott Craig and Joy Suzanne Johnson, but has received no request to do so.

That was word on Monday from Jennifer Canada, spokeswoman for the N.C. Department of Justice.

Meanwhile, Craig remained in the Durham County Jail on Monday after Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson reduced his bail to $50,000 on Friday.

The husband and wife are accused in rape, kidnapping and assault cases that include allegations of forced sex while channeling demons, and caning and caging a man.

Saacks is out of the office this week and could not be reached for comment.

Johnson, 30, was third vice chairwoman of the Durham County Democratic Party when police arrested her in June on charges that she aided and abetted her husband during the alleged offenses involving a satanic cult.

Tracey Cline, a Democrat who is running unopposed for the Durham district attorney seat, has asked that the case be turned over to the attorney general if it has not been settled by Jan. 5, when she would take office. During the Democratic primary races this spring, Cline was in contact with Johnson.

"I'm not sure how much, but it was clearly enough that she thought she might have a conflict of interest on the case," Saacks said Friday.

Cline could not be reached for comment Monday.

Craig was still in jail on Monday despite his bond being lowered, a jail spokesperson said. He is charged with second-degree rape, second-degree forcible sexual offense, three counts of second-degree kidnapping and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Johnson was released on bond in July.

A 19-year-old man has accused Craig of assault and kidnaping -- forcing him into a dog cage with his arms and legs shackled, and beating him with a cane. The man's 44-year-old girlfriend has accused Craig of raping and kidnapping her.

Diana Palmer, a local Democratic Party official, is accused of removing items related to the alleged crimes from Johnson's and Craig's house. She was already out on bond.

Palmer, Johnson and Craig have denied wrongdoing

Case dismissed against woman accused in cult crimes

Posted: Today at 10:19 a.m.

Durham, N.C. — The case against a Durham woman accused of aiding in crimes authorities say were carried out by a satanic cult was dismissed Thursday after a judge denied a request to delay the case.

Dianna Palmer, 44, of Cottage Woods Court, was charged in July with one count of accessory after the fact of assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said Palmer knew about assaults alleged to have occurred in a residence on Albany Street in Durham and said she helped Joseph Scott Craig remove evidence from the house.Craig, 25, and his wife, Joy Johnson, 30, were arrested in June after a man and a woman told authorities they were beaten, shackled to beds, kept in dog cages and starved.

Prosecutors have said a man and a woman met Craig through a shared interest in Satan worship but said they never consented to physical abuse.

Palmer and Johnson knew each other through the Durham County Democratic Party. Palmer is the party's first vice-chair, and Johnson was the third vice-chair, as well as the vice-chair of the Young Democrats, before resigning the positions following her arrest.

Prosecutors asked Thursday for a continuance in Palmer's case, but defense attorney Bill Thomas objected, saying the case had dragged on for more than six months.

Charge dismissed in sexual assault case
By Anne Blythe, Staff Writer Comment on this story
DURHAM - A District Court judge dismissed a charge today against Diana Palmer, the former Durham County Democratic Party official accused this summer of being an accessory in a sexual assault case.

But the case could be revived if the state Attorney General’s Office chooses to seek an indictment, a Durham prosecutor says.

“This case should end here,” said Bill Thomas, the Durham lawyer who represented Palmer.

An assistant district attorney had asked District Court Judge Nancy Gordon to continue the case this morning, But Thomas objected.

Because the charge was a felony, state prosecutors could go to a grand jury and ask for an indictment.

Palmer, a former first vice chairwoman of the Durham County Democratic Party, was jailed in July on on a charge of being an accessory after the fact of an assault with a deadly weapon.

Investigators claimed she removed possible evidence from the home of Joy Suzanne Johnson, who had been the party's third vice chairwoman, and Johnson’s husband, Joseph Scott Craig.

Police have accused Craig of beating and caging a man and sexually assaulting a woman in his and Johnson's Durham home. He is charged with second-degree rape, second-degree forcible sexual offense, three counts of second-degree kidnapping and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.Johnson is accused of standing by during the assaults.

Tracey Cline, Durham’s new district attorney, said earlier this month that she would ask the state Attorney General’s Office to take over the Johnson and Palmer cases to avoid the possibility of a conflict of interest.

As a Democrat who ran for office this past spring, Cline was in contact with Johnson.

There have been discussions among the Durham prosecutors and the state’s special prosecution team about a transfer of the cases, but no formal request had been received in the Attorney General’s Office as of this morning, according to Noelle Talley, spokeswoman for the office

Defense lawyers have described the case as “consensual sadomasochism gone awry.”

James Frederick Bethard, 19, of Maryland, accused Craig of forcing him into a dog cage with his arms and legs shackled, and beating him repeatedly with a cane.

The woman who has accused Craig of raping her testified this summer that she also engaged in consensual oral sex with the accused more than once. The News & Observer is not identifying the woman in keeping with its general policy of not naming people who allege sex crimes.
